How often should a sump pump be tested?
Every few months and before storm season: pour water into the pit until the float lifts, and confirm the pump starts, empties the pit and shuts off.
How long do sump pumps last?
Many sump pumps last around 7–10 years depending on how often they run and their build quality. A pump that runs frequently or is near that age is worth testing before storm season.
Why does my sump pump keep running?
A stuck float switch, a failed check valve letting water flow back into the pit, a pump too small for the inflow, or a high water table can keep it running. Constant running shortens the pump's life.
